A comparative analysis of the prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in relation to radiation contamination of Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions locality from 2005 to 2010 was carried out. Analysis of dosimetric certification results of settlements indicates that the Ukrainian Polissya is a specific region with special presentation of the Chornobyl catastrophe consequences. This region has a high level of radionuclides contamination and belongs to the zone of guaranteed (voluntary) evacuation and enhanced radiological control. The highest MS prevalence rates are determined in areas contaminated with radionuclides due to the Chornobyl catastrophe, that indicates on the possible impact of radionuclides contamination as an additional risk factor for MS development and determines the necessity for creation of health care systems for this patients on the basis of regional Specialized Centers for Radiation Protection with scientific and methodological support of SI “NRCRM of NAMS of Ukraine.”

Key words: prevalence rates, multiple sclerosis, areas contaminated with radionuclides.
